The distance from Kigali Rwanda’s capital to Volcanoes National Park is approximately 105 kilometers  by road which is roughly a two to three-hour drive depending on the road conditions and traffic jam.   The journey from Kigali to the Volcanoes is so pleasing, visitors get exposure to the beautiful rolling hills, bustling streets, smoothly maintained roads, and the rural countryside.

Why 4x4 vehicles required?

Visitors to the Volcanoes National Park are required to use a 4×4 wheel drive vehicle due to the rugged montane surface, which is at times slippery, especially during the rainy season. Travellers willing to participate in the gorilla or golden monkey tracking and spend their night in Kigali, are expected to set off at 4:00 am and reach the headquarters at 7:00 am, returning to Kigali on the same day is possible as trekking takes 4 to 5 hours.

The Golden monkey trek, participate in Golden monkey tracking which is one of the experiences that are unique to this areas as you follow the beautiful monkeys live nowhere else in the world.  The Golden monkeys in volcanoes, they were easily accessed after a brief hike.

Other activities include a visit to Iby’ Iwacu village tour for a local experiences that involves meeting the local people of Rwanda and learn about their history, culture and way of life.  Other visitor can opt to visit the Diana Fossey Museum and learn about gorilla conservation efforts in Rwanda as it dates way back from Primatologist Diana Fossey.
